2019 Show: DANTE
Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet of the Middle Ages. His most well-known work is the Divine Comedy, an epic poem containing three Canti:
Inferno - Dante's travels through the 9 levels of the Inferno
Purgatorio - Climbing the Mountain of Purgatory
Paradiso - The escape and ascent into Paradise
This work is widely considered to be the most important poem of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. The imagery Dante uses in his writings were used as the basis for much of the art depicting these three areas of afterlife in Italian culture for generations that followed. Composer, Randall D. Standridge has this to say of his musical setting to Dante's poetry: "The mysteries of the afterlife are explored in this adaptation of Dante's literary classic, The Divine Comedy. After the dramatic Prologue, The show gets of to a fiery start with Inferno, followed by a contemplative moment in Purgatorio (music from Funeral for Rikard Nordraak). Finally, the ensemble makes a daring escape before arriving at Paradiso."
